weaning

Raemi seems to be weaning herself, or at least wanting to nurse a lot less than she used to. She generally still gets a pretty good breastmilk breakfast lunch and dinner as she nurses when she gets up, before her nap and before bed. She'll sometimes also nurse 1 time mid-evening and once or twice in the middle of the night. But she used to nurse like 2 or 3 times before her nap and 3 or 4 times in the afternoon and evening. I know that's a lot but I think it's because she eats a little at a time because of her reflux. And now it's gotten to where during the day she'll come up and ask for milk but nurse for only a minute or two max  and a lot of times she nurses for 10 seconds and then is done. And it's not like she's just consolidating her feedings because she doesn't seem to be drinking any more than usual at the times that she does nurse.

The most dramatic change, though, was that today she didn't want to nurse when she got up and didn't nurse for the first time of the day until 12:30 when she went down for her nap. Granted she had awakened at 6am and nursed then before going back to sleep, but that's still a long time for her to go without nursing. She just started actually drinking cows milk in her sippy cup a few days ago, and I'm thinking this newest development is likely related to that.  She usually has some finger foods as a snack in the morning along with water in her sippy, because she used to turn down milk. I kind of hate that now that she's decided she likes milk she's choosing it over nursing, but I know it wouldn't be right to refuse to let her drink it. I know that if she's ready to wean I need to let her. I'm trying to offer her lots of good things to eat...cooked carrots, peas, gerber chicken sticks, etc. So far she's turned all those down and isn't eating a large variety of foods. Right now she mostly eats freeze dried yogurt bites and dry cereal, plus chips, cookies and crackers if I give them to her. She's getting healthy foods, the cereal she eats is an organic 7 grain Kashi cereal, and the yogurt is really good for her, but she's still not getting any fruits or veggies or meats or anything. Hopefully she'll keep getting most of her nourishment from breastmilk until she becomes a less picky eater. Plus the prospect of her being weaned makes me really sad. I know it has to happen at some point and a lot of people don't even nurse past a year, but I love the closeness we have when she's nursing, and it's just really sweet and special and I'm not ready to give it up.

I'm sure that's a hard thing to go through. ((hugs))

As far as the picky eating, Kasen has become the same way & it's really challenging to find ways of getting all those nutrients in him. I wish he'd just eat anything & everything like some kids. -Wouldn't that be nice?!
